The house consisted of many, many rooms which had been designed and redesigned by Mrs Winchester herself. She would shut herself in a room and talk with the 'spirits' each night, and each morning she would present the builders with new plans. Because she wasn't an architect, because she was mad, or because she just wanted to confuse the spirits who haunted her, the plans sometimes ended up being contradictory, leaving doors in places they could not be, or stairs that led to nowhere.
