Diary (September 2011)

No summary has been written for this month, yet. Probably I've forgotten to, or this is the current month so I cannot summarise what hasn't happened yet.

  • Warm today.

It's been really warm the last couple of days, which has made things uncomfortable in general. Plus I've been sleeping less well, too, which has left me tired and moody. Oh well.

Not really managed to do much this evening, because of that. I keep saying to myself I should at least see a doctor, but that just seems like hassle.

  • IPv6.
  • mod_cband.
  • More words.

Over the last few days I've been changing my DNS configuration so that the server's host will resolve by IPv6 directly - returning both AAAA and A records for it and other hostnames. I've also updated dyndns so that the redirector uses AAAA records, too. This works well for the laptop which can directly connect, and from work which now uses the IPv6 by preference to the IPv4, it seems.

The desktop machine is another matter, though. It sits behind the Squeezebox, which acts as a wireless bridge, although it seems to be more of a forwarder. The devices behind the squeezebox never receive DHCP responses, so they have to be configured statically. That's not a problem, but it also appears that they get no IPv6 traffic. At least, they don't work as they ought to. This explains why connecting to some things from the desktop is slower than the laptop.

But from this, it also appears that mod_cband, which limits the bandwidth used by Apache2 doesn't support IPv6 addresses very well - it lists them all as 255.255.255.255, which isn't so helpful. For now, I'll cope and at some point might investigate a different mechanism for limiting the bandwidth. Whilst I was at it, thought, I updated the logging rules so that 'internal' IPv6 addresses aren't logged to the 'external' log file - I'd set them up so that only the known IPv4 subnet and the localhosts were non-external, which is wrong. Strictly I should probably also include the link-local addresses, but I'm not as worried about those.

I've managed to write about 800 words this evening, and also played a few games. But that's all made me really tired, so I should probably sleep. It'd be better if I could get more words written at some point.

Oh, I also added monitoring of the IPv6 interface to munin as well, so that I've got some details on how much traffic actually goes through it rather than IPv4. Probably not a whole lot.

  • Dreams of invasion.
  • Being Erica.

My dream a couple of nights ago was about taking a train somewhere, and the whole world was attacked by aliens. The train separated and we had to bundle to the far end of the train move away from where it was doing to hit things, and the train tumbled off the track and over and over and people had already died from the attack but now there were bodies just flying everywhere. The train rolled off an embankment and down into a canal where it hit a lock and quickly sank. I managed to get out, and one of the girls on the train also managed to swim out after me, just before the lock broke and the water went rushing out. We cleaned ourselves off and wandered through the nearby town. The attack had left people dead, but not decomposing. Even after days, the people were just cold and white. And still very dead. There were no animals and we didn't see any living people for a few days. Eventually we met a small group that had collected from different areas - most people had died in the attack with only maybe 1 in 50 being unaffected. A couple told us of the aliens that they'd seen, who'd taken the living people and made them work for them. Doing secretarial work and filling out forms. We wanted out work back, but all we could do was just try to survive and stay out of sight.

A week or so back, I had a dream about being in an hollowed out asteroid, travelling through space, and trying to fix problems. I remember being able to see the stars through a gap in the crater where I was working and they would spin around us and then jump and spin, as if we'd sped up for a moment. I remembered trying to work out the reasons, and there were only two that I could come up with - either we were experiencing sudden acceleration which meant that the stars were swung around my point of view, or there was a time distortion effect which meant that the perception of the stars was skewed. The purpose of having a hollowed asteroid is that there's a lot of shell which takes the brunt of external forces - even with unlikely collisions in deeper space, or unfortunate collisions in stellar space it makes a far lesser impact on the habitable section. I remember thinking that if you want to travel great distances in a survivable environment it has to be sufficiently a) protected and b) self sustaining, the former of which is handled by miles of rock between the habitation and the outside, and the latter is provided by having sufficient power and space to maintain a sustainable colony. The difficulty is finding a balance on power generation-to-sustenance for a given colony size. A large shell also means greater physical strength which matters if you intend to move the asteroid, and even still you can't use your precious power performing maneuvers when the life of the colony may depend on it. Therefore... it's unlikely that any acceleration would have been of our own making except by accident. The other alternative is a secondary force being exerted on the asteroid. The most likely would be a co-orbital body, and in order to have such a large and uncommon effect on the acceleration of the asteroid, it must have been a quite elliptic orbit and the other body would need to be significantly heavier (or possibly denser) to exert such force. I didn't really consider the possibilities of time distortion aside from the fact that was one choice.

Which all seems surprisingly detailed for one of my dreams, and possibly owes a little to Greg Egan's Incandescence which I read last year. As I was in need of something interesting to include in the nightly test reports, I included a slightly different version of the dream in that day's report. The story was...

[Quote]
James smiled. The ship would continue until they reached their destination. His sleep had been woke by a small rock strike only a day earlier, and as the maintenance technician on this trip, the systems had revived him to fix the problem. Over the last few centuries the crust of the asteroid had taken its share of weathering from dust, but even in the depths of space there was still the very unlikely chance that larger items would lie in their path. They'd been unlucky. The 'ship' - a hollowed out asteroid - was a mile thick, but even still there were instruments on the surface for navigation, and propulsion. It only had only taken a few hours to send a remote out to replace the broken instrument, but even in that time he'd begun to feel the loneliness of space. Surrounded by ten thousand sleepers, and libraries of DNA sequenced flora and fauna, there was no company. The systems that ran the ship did their job, but they weren't friendly. He lay back in his pod and smiled again as he fell to sleep until the ship needed him again.

I discovered from Wikipedia that there are plans for a UK remake of the Canadian series [Series banner]Being Erica (2009, CBC)Comedy/Drama/FantasyThirty-something Erica Strange receives the ultimate opportunity - to go back in time and relive her most defining moments. From first kisses and prom nights to job interviews, Erica now has the chance to put right her long list of regrets with the hope that it will result in the life she really wants. Being Erica in Glasgow. Equally worryingly there's apparently a US remake in the offing as well. Why can't they just keep a good series ? Is it so unacceptable to understand that there might be a programme that happens in a different country that it needs to be remade to make it relateable ? More specifically, is Canada so unlike the UK that such a show would work better by being made here ? Or so unlike the US ? I remember seeing irritable comments from people about the Wikipedia page for Being Human remake because it wasn't a US show - it's a Canadian show that just happens to be shown in the US. They didn't want to say that it was a Canadian series, so in the end they opted for describing it as a 'North American' series. Quite bogglesome.

Not got any writing done these evening and felt tired <sigh>.

  • Fringe.

I've been putting off watching [Series banner]Fringe (2008, FOX)Action and Adventure/Drama/Science-FictionTeleportation. Mind control. Invisibility. Astral projection. Mutation. Reanimation. Phenomena that exist on the Fringe of science unleash their strange powers in this thrilling series, co-created by J.J. So I'm watching it now and I'm excited because the credits are in orange, not blue or red... because this is a new world and not the ones from before. Is that a little sad that I'm excited by a colour ? <laugh>

Ooh! And I'm sure that John Sheppard from [Series banner]Stargate Atlantis (2004, SciFi)Action and Adventure/Science-FictionThe story of Stargate Atlantis follows the cliffhanger episode on Stargate SG-1's seventh season finale "Lost City", where SG-1 found an outpost made by the race known as the Ancients in Antarctica. Michael Dorn came up in the credits for [Series banner]Castle (2009, ABC)DramaRick Castle is one of the world's most successful crime authors. • Person Of Interest.

I watched [Series banner]Person Of Interest (2011, CBS)Action and Adventure/DramaPERSON OF INTEREST stars Jim Caviezel, Emmy Award winner Michael Emerson and Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson in a crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent, Reese, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire, Finch, to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese's special training in covert operations appeals to Finch, a software genius who invented a program that uses pattern recognition to identify people about to be involved in violent crimes. Using state-of-the-art surveillance technology, the two work outside of the law, using Reese's adept skills and Finch's unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the "person of interest" and stop the crime before it happens. Reese's actions draw the attention of the NYPD, including homicide detective Carter, and Fusco, a cop whom Reese uses to his advantage. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything.Person Of Interest episode "[Episode image]Person Of Interest1x01

" today. It reminds me of [Series banner]Human Target (2010, FOX)Action and Adventure/DramaIt takes a brave, selfless man to make himself a "human target" in order to save the lives of those in danger. Christopher Chance is a unique private security guard hired to protect. Call him what you like, because for Chance, it's about one thing only: saving his clients' lives. He puts himself directly in the line of fire as he races against time to save his client, while unraveling the truth behind the mission. With every new danger, Chance's dark history will also unravel. Does anyone know who Christopher Chance really is, or what secrets lay buried in his past? What would make a man willingly become a human target?Human Target a bit, albeit with a different premise and less humour. As that only lasted for 2 seasons, I'm not holding out too much hope for Person Of Interest, but maybe it'll be something. <sigh> yeah, I'm still a little disappointed that they canned Human Target.

Aside from the theme to Tickle On The Tum (1984, ITV1)Tickle On The Tum I've had [Track]A Whiter Shade Of Pale[Track], by [Artist]Procol Harum[Artist] going around my head the last day. • Cards.
  • Wandering through memories.

I got a few nice cards over the last week or so for my birthday! Yay <smile>. The one from Mum and Dad was the strangest - you can fold it a few different ways and different things appear!

Chatting to Chris tonight he's reminded me about something else I wrote back in RISC OS days that I'd completely forgotten about - and which was useful and pretty neat. Still amuses me about some of this stuff. And whilst searching Arcade's lists I found other things I'd forgotten - in particular some bits of ReadMail which I couldn't find the source to for a good 10 minutes. That's before I remembered that they were in the copy of the disc that was made when I moved discs, which contained the backup of the disc that I made when I moved discs, that contained the copies of the floppy disc that I made when I wanted to throw the actual discs out - Y:\Root\ROBackup\Zeus\Apollo\Athena\OldDiscs\Floppies\Batch1\Archives\OldApps3\. Of course, it's obvious isn't it ?

And inside that directory was a whole selection of LongFiles-encoded files and applications, just to make things a little more fun. It's so long ago I hardly remembered any of these things.

I had been wondering - only this morning - about the things that I'd lost over the years. The things that I remember that I don't have any more, as opposed to those that I forgot I've ever done. One of the things that bothered me was that tools that I had to extract data from DDFS formatted floppies, as it had been lost some time ago and I had no idea where it was. Turns out that I've found it whilst looking of part of the PBS software which it seems that I have lost, hidden in Y:\Root\ROBackup\Zeus\Apollo\Athena\OldDiscs\OldGerph\Areas\Justin\Temporary\Temporary\DDFS.

I'm particularly fond of the idea of a temporary directory containing a temporary directory <smile> Coupled with it being in the OldGerph archive inside OldDiscs, inside the old copy of Athena from when I upgraded the disc to Apollo, and it in turn inside the copy of Apollo, and then within the copy of Zeus. No wonder things get lost <sigh>.

I probably shouldn't have spent so long this evening going through these old programs, but it's still a bit of a wonder <smile>. Now I need to make sure I don't get too miserable off it...

After writing just about 500 words yesterday, I managed ... nothing this evening. I could really do with focusing on writing some of the bits that are harder. There's some sections that I've been putting off which are going to be quite long and need some concentration on.

  • Tired.
  • Temperature monitoring.

I didn't sleep well last night. I went to sleep after watching some more [Series banner]Fringe (2008, FOX)Action and Adventure/Drama/Science-FictionTeleportation. Mind control. Invisibility. Astral projection. Mutation. Reanimation. Phenomena that exist on the Fringe of science unleash their strange powers in this thrilling series, co-created by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias), combining the grit of the police procedural with the excitement of the unknown. The story revolves around three unlikely colleagues - a beautiful young FBI agent, a brilliant scientist who's spent the last 17 years in a mental institution and the scientist's sardonic son - who investigate a series of bizarre deaths and disasters known as "the pattern." Someone is using our world as an experimental lab. And all clues lead to Massive Dynamic, a shadowy global corporation that may be more powerful than any nation.Fringe and writing about 2500 words, and my arms and legs ached. Through the night I kept waking up and what little dreams I had were a mix of code and Fringe-like things. So today I'm quite tired.

I monitor the temperature of the server at home. I also monitor the temperature of the surrounding area, as that gives a reference as to how likely it is that the temperature of the server will rise. I used to use the information from the Met Office for the closest monitoring station they publish (Bedford). As that information is only available hourly and delayed by an hour, it's not ideal but was indicative of the general state.

However, it's been pretty flakey these last couple of days. So I've finally given in and changed to using the details from the Cambridge DTG as a source. They have sensors on the top of one of their labs and offer a simple text interface to get them. So, I knocked together a little plugin to read the details. I admit freely that I could have done it a lot simpler with just a single shell script to pull out the temperature and the like, but somehow I always end up writing more code than is strictly necessary for the task.

Generally I think this is because I follow the pattern of 'decode data into local structure, expand with detail or process, produce results'. I remember that when I started out programming I would generally just take the shorter route of 'data goes to result'. The bothersome thing is that I'm not sure that the way that I'm doing things now is really all that much better for getting the job done. Oh it feels nicer to have decoded results internally held in a structure and then to extract them from there, but if all you're doing is passing things through, is it worth it? I know it's not always the case that we're passing things through and that doesn't allow for as much flexibility in the future, but for the specific problem... not sure.

Anyhow, the plugin is available on my 'usenet' area, and appears to work quite well for me in both MRTG and Munin (which I run in parallel at the moment).

I've just been going through some of the old stuff in my Patch directory, and I'd completely forgotten about so much stuff. There's a lot of things that I had completely forgotten. <laugh>

  • Random Music.
  • How cold?

Playing random music in AudioSurf this evening I came across a few strange tracks...

  • [Track]Stalker[Track], by [Artist]Aphrodite[Artist] - Not sure what to make of this. It's a bit odd, but quite fun.
  • [Track]Come Cover Me[Track], by [Artist]Nightwish[Artist] - quite neat, in a [Artist]Within Temptation[Artist] sort of way (I have a feeling that the comparison is the other way generally).
  • [Track]Heart With You[Track], by [Artist]Nigel Stonier[Artist] - a surprisingly bouncey and fun track to play along to.
  • [Track]Hocus Pocus[Track], by [Artist]Focus[Artist] - uh... 70s jazzy something with yodelling... bizarre.
  • [Track]Step[Track], by [Artist]Ministry[Artist] - just don't know what to say, really.

I'm watching [Series banner]Eureka (2006, Syfy)Comedy/Drama/Science-FictionThe sleepy Pacific Northwest town of Eureka is hiding a mysterious secret. The government has been relocating the world's geniuses and their families to this rustic town for years where innovation and chaos have lived hand in hand. • Breaking In.

I watched a few episodes of [Series banner]Breaking In (2011, FOX)ComedyContra Security, corporate America's answer to "The A-Team," gives clients a sense of security by first ripping it away. The firm is led by OZ, a larger-than-life head honcho who is a man of mystery and master of manipulation. The members of the odd squad include alluring bad girl Melanie, who is in charge of lock-picking, safe-cracking and heart-breaking; and Cash, a fanboy who specializes in strategy, logistics and office pranks only a mad genius could think up. Oz's newest recruit, plucked right out of college, is lovable and charming computer hacker Cameron Price. Unfortunately for Cameron, cracking into state-of-the-art security systems is a lot easier than dealing with his co-workers. Between Melanie's sex appeal and Cash's hazing, Cameron has more than a few obstacles to overcome if he wants to cement his status as part of the team and become Oz's go-to guy.Breaking In this evening. It's quite fun - it's got 'Sam' from [Series banner]Reaper (2007, The CW)Comedy/DramaThroughout Sam's life, he always wondered why his mom and dad were so easy on him. Whether it was sports, school, career choices, or picking on his little brother Kyle, Sam always got away with everything. Because of it, he decided to drop out of college and take a dead beat job, wasting most of his time playing video games and wishing he could ask his co-worker Andi out. However, everything changes in Sam's life once he turns 21 and finds out the reason his parents let him get over was because they sold his soul to the devil before he was born.Reaper in it, and it has a little of that feel. It's also got Fred Savage directing some episodes, and Alyssa Milano in one, too. Oh, and Christian Slater, who I feel I should know from something, but can't seem to put my finger on.

I feel icky again this evening, which might mean that it's not just bread that makes me feel unwell.

Best of luck to Chris Williams who starts his new job at The Register tomorrow!. I'm sure you'll be great <smile>.

I've managed to write about 5000 words of my ramble this evening, on two different topics. I'm slowly getting to the point where I've got a reasonable body of text to pick through. Some of it might just get marked out as not being used, but I think most seems pretty resasonable so far. There are still quite a few 'fixme' markers in the documents that I've written and I'm pretty sure that there's going to be another bunch of documents to go alongside what I've got as well. I'm hoping to about double what I have now so that there's enough to keep going for a month.

  • Day After Day.

Whilst listening to music tonight I noticed that the first line of [Track]Second Love[Track], from [Album]Remedy Lane[Album], by [Artist]Pain Of Salvation[Artist] starts 'Day after day', and the first line (lyric) of [Track]Young Lust[Track], from [Album]The Wall[Album], by [Artist]Pink Floyd[Artist] starts with the same thing. So it made me wonder... are there many times that start with 'Day after day' where the content is positive, or is it always negative ?

If I were feeling energetic, I'd set up a google search and measure the results by their positive and negative words in the text returned. However, I'm not really feeling that energetic really.

Quick skim of the 61 tracks that I've got whose lyrics apparently include the phrase (I knew that local search would be useful for something!) includes [Track]Overkill[Track], by [Artist]Men At Work[Artist] (negative), [Track]Right Here Waiting[Track], by [Artist]Richard Marx[Artist] (positive), [Track]Shelter[Track], by [Artist]Celtus[Artist] (neutral - it's awkward because it's about a negative situation looking forward with positive eyes), [Track]The Fool On The Hill[Track], by [Artist]The Beatles[Artist] (neutral, I've no idea!).

Not exactly a scientific sampling, but... interesting. Ish.

I really love the guitar bits on [Artist]Pain Of Salvation[Artist] tracks. <smile>

I found out that another couple of people are leaving at work, today. It's all very... strange.

It's kinda surprising how some tracks provoke old memories afresh - [Track]In Two Minds[Track], from [Album]Out Of Myself[Album], by [Artist]Riverside[Artist] always brings on lots of guilt. Not that that's hard with me, but still...

Maybe I should have got some tea instead of playing AudioSurf this evening... Hmm.

  • Bethany's birthday.

Back from Bethany's birthday party now - it's been a tiring weekend. I managed to get up on Friday to see Bethany and Alex before the party and we had an afternoon playing. I got to bounce on the trampoline, and to find out that bouncing on a trampoline with a little headache makes a bit headache <sigh>.

I got to fight with Alex a little, and to see Bethany riding her bike, without stablisers - up and down the road, and to read Bethany a story before she went home to bed. She was quite huggy all day <smile>, and Alex was a lot more talkative and less shy than even at his birthday a month or so back.

On Saturday we went to Whitby - the kids had gone to a wedding - and got to walk along the beach! Whee! And we got to have chips too <smile>. We had a Red Dwarf and SciFi quiz with one of Claire and Adam's friends - which showed up how little I remember of Red Dwarf. Oh well.

The party - after small dramas before hand - didn't go too badly. Bethany seemed to have a good time, and I got to bounce on the bouncey castle with them again. When we went home and she opened all her presents (quite a few again) she was quite excited by a little 'Barbie' doggy, who was very soft, and some little 'twighlight ponies'. Apparently these aren't vampire ponoies (which was a little bit of a disappointment) but were very brightly coloured and each came with a little pet.

They had a bath, and Alex wanted me to wash his hair for him, which was nice - he used to be first to want to get out of the bath when he was smaller. After supper, Bethany gave me a cuddle and wouldn't let go for about 10 minutes. Every time anyone said anything about going or bed time, she snuggled in closer. Very sweet, but I think she just wasn't wanting anyone to go away, and she was very tired after the wedding and party. Mummy had a big cuddle and then she went up to bed.

We got up early to see them off at the bus stop (it's first day back at school) - Alex was very energetic, but Bethany seemed completely shattered. Poor lass. Hope she had a good first day, anyhow.

I came home and collapsed on to the bed a little... it's tiring this traveling lark.

  • Skype.

Skype's been annoying today. I installed some more memory in my machine and - obviously - had to restart. On restarting Skype seemed to want to take a photo to use as my profile picture, despite the fact that I already have my custom picture. I thought I'd try to upgrade the software to see if that helped. Although it will happily tell me there's a new version, it won't download it. I tried ringing mum and dad through the skype phone thing, but it just rang and rang. Every so often Skype would pop to the top of the screen for the past few months, suggesting I call people - which I might do if there was ever anyone using it that I wanted to call that I didn't talk to daily.

Aside from giving me cheaper calls to mum and dad - which I can do through the phone anyhow - there's not a lot of reason left to keep the PC client running. Nobody has been on there to talk to since about April, and before that it was pretty sporadic. It's really become a bit of a waste. Plus it's using ~5% of my memory (was 10% before I upgraded to the heady heights of 2GB).

I guess I'll give it a little longer but it seems like it's had its time.
