I've felt really icky the last few days, and I've been coughing like I'm
going to be sick sometimes. I'm hoping I just need a bit of rest. That
said, I meant to head home early today and didn't quite make it. Oh
well.
Film this evening was "Source Code (2011)Action, Mystery, Romance, Sci-Fi, Thriller Source Code"
which was
surprisingly good, reminding me a little of "12 Monkeys"
,
but more of a single-scene play, to be honest. Very small cast, story
reminiscent of
The Outer Limits (1995, SciFi)Science-FictionLike the classic 1960s series of the same name, each episode is a celebration of the human imagination in which humanity's exploration of new frontiers in technology, outer space and the human experience reveal our greatest hopes and darkest fears. Stories on The Outer Limits have explored the consequences of such controversial and thought-provoking topics as genetic manipulation, alien visitation and life after death. The Outer Limits, and a decent ending.
Really quite enjoyable!

don't quite get the whole RPG culture really.
Oh yes, and Alex pointed me at
The Horribly
Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon, which at
10 minutes is the longest trailer that I've watched for a film that
doesn't exist.
My arm's aching the evening, although I'm not sure why. It's just sore.
Oh well.
I've ended up doing some more work today, trying to finish the stuff I
started yesterday, despite it being Bank Holiday Monday today. Partly
because I'm behind, partly because I've only got a 3-day week this week
- as I'm off to Bethany's birthday - and partly because it's quite fun
to play with blade systems we have.
This afternoon I watched
Doctor Who (2005, BBC One)Action and Adventure/Science-FictionThe Doctor looks and seems human. He's handsome, witty, and could be mistaken for just another man in the street. But the Doctor is a Time Lord: a 900 year old alien with 2 hearts, part of a gifted civilization who mastered time travel. bad. It beat the Sylvester McCoy one that I watched last weekend anyhow.
The older ones are a lot more drawn out - to be honest, the recent

I've managed just about 1000 words this weekend, mainly because I was
doing work-stuff. Oh, and I did spend a little time on getting
the CSS right, as I mentioned before. It's still not what I want, but
it's quite a bit closer than the diary heading is.
I'm trying to generalise the headings I use in the diary so that they're
not quite as broken as they are now, and they can be used for non-fixed
width elements. So far as I can tell, the requirements I place on the
design are either not possible with CSS, or after lots of faffing, I
cannot manage to acheive them.
My most recent attempt
fails on just 2 things, which are related - the summary text wraps in to
the space below the heading, and the heading background itself doesn't
extend down to the bottom of the heading bar (which would prevent the
summary from wrapping down there.
It's essentially a two-column layout. However, none of the ways that
I've seen to do this actually works in the way that I want - almost
every time I come across these things I find that something
has to be fixed, which I'm trying to avoid.
I did my big tesco shop today. Previous one lasted about 3 months, so
we'll see how well I do off this one. Is it a little sad that I've got a
shelf set aside for my Prawn Cocktail Crisps - as they need to last 3
months, a few packets makes sense. And I only eat them at weekends
anyhow.
Couple of films today. "Pirates Of The Caribbean- On Stranger Tides (2011)Action, Adventure, Fantasy Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love -- or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.Pirates Of The Caribbean- On Stranger Tides"

quite fun, if you accept that the plot is secondary. Interrupting that

As precious time ebbs away, the Doctor must teach his adversaries that time travel has responsibilities. And he must succeed before an almighty price is paid.Let's Kill Hitler" - a
slightly odd episode, introducing more of River Song, and also making it
apparent that the TARDIS can change its size. Which shouldn't really be
much of a surprise as it is bigger on the inside than the
outside - spacial dimensions don't mean much to it.
And then there was "Limitless (2011)Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller An action-thriller about a writer who takes an experimental drug that allows him to use 100 percent of his mind. As one man evolves into the perfect version of himself, forces more corrupt than he can imagine mark him for assassination. Out-of-work writer Eddie Morra's (Cooper) rejection by girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) confirms his belief that he has zero future. That all vanishes the day an old friend introduces Eddie to NZT, a designer pharmaceutical that makes him laser focused and more confident than any man alive. Now on an NZT-fueled odyssey, everything Eddie's read, heard or seen is instantly organized and available to him. As the former nobody rises to the top of the financial world, he draws the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (De Niro), who sees this enhanced version of Eddie as the tool to make billions. But brutal side effects jeopardize his meteoric ascent. With a dwindling stash and hit men who will eliminate him to get the NZT, Eddie must stay wired long enough to elude capture and fulfill his destiny. If he can't, he will become just another victim who thought he'd found invincibility in a bottle.Limitless"
which was surprisingly
good fun - I was hoping it'd be neat, but wasn't expecting it to be
quite the way that it turned out. Neat .
Also had a little play with a new area of the site that I'm putting
together. I'm going to try to get the layout and CSS to be a little
better than the curent diary.
I've been a little upbeat since the shopping arrived, so I'm trying to
stay that way until bed time... which, looking at the time, should
probably be around now.
I also discovered a fun little thing today. A film from when I was
little had stuck in my mind. Partly because of the many cool spaceships,
and partly because it had Hannibal from
The A-Team (1983, NBC)Action and Adventure"If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire: THE A-TEAM." These words open one of the most famous TV series of all time. The A-Team was about 4 escaped fugitives from a crime they did not commit: Col. John "Hannibal" Smith, their heroic leader, in charge of making the plans, Lt. Templeton "Face" Peck, the team's conman and womanizer, Cpt. H.M. "Howlin' Mad" Murdock, an insane pilot who acts as a comedy relief, and Sgt. B.A. Barracus, played by Mr. T in his role of a lifetime. Together, they fight evildoers, escape the military, and create catchphrases in the process. A classic for all ages, The A-Team should be watch by everyone. The A-Team in
it. I noticed the poster for "Battle Beyond The Stars (1980)Action, Comedy, Sci-FiIn yet another film patterned on _The Seven Samurai_, a band of diverse heroes in outer space are assembled to defend a planet of peaceful colonists from an armada of aggressors. If the special effects look familiar, it is because you've the same space sequences recycled in other low budget SF films.Battle Beyond The Stars"
has a flash for the Art Director - a James Cameron... Surprised and
amused me .
Allegedly,
White Collar (2009, USA Network)DramaWhite Collar is about the unlikely partnership of a con artist and an FBI agent who have been playing cat and mouse for years. Neal Caffrey, a charming criminal mastermind, is finally caught by his nemesis, FBI Agent Peter Burke. When Neal escapes from a maximum-security prison to find his lost love, Peter nabs him once again. Rather than returning to jail, Neal suggests an alternative plan: He'll provide his criminal expertise to assist the Feds in catching other elusive criminals. Initially wary, Peter quickly finds that Neal provides insight and intuition that can't be found on the right side of the law.White Collar has been renewed, too, which is
cool. I have a feeling that many other series are starting up again
shortly. Mid-September till early October seems to be the time for new
series.

able to make work.

today, so I'm going to watch that tomorrow evening! Whee!
I really like bananas. They're yummy and great. So why don't I have a

left. Will the banana make me fat ? or will I be chastised for having a

Maybe I didn't want the banana after all.
I've had Swinging On A Star going around my head the last few days, because of

I'd just
said that if there weren't any aliens or any decent Sci-Fi at the end
of the series, I'd be really disappointed - and then there was an alien.
This was after the gratuitous sex-scene . Such a slow episode,
though. I've said it before, but if they're going for tension, they
missed the mark. When they do the action, it works, but otherwise it's
very tedious.
Covert Affairs (2010, USA Network)Action and Adventure/Drama"Covert Affairs" centers on a young CIA trainee, Annie Walker, mysteriously summoned to headquarters for duty as field operative. While Annie believes she's been promoted for her exceptional linguistic skills, there may be something or someone from her past that her CIA bosses are really after. episode of the season, was quite good today, too. No word on the series
being renewed, but I'd really hope so - it's been quite a fun season,
certainly up to the standard of the first.
I played a little Audiosurf again this evening, trying to beat some
people who've knocked me off the top of the scoreboard. Last Five , from Londinium , by
Archive I managed
to
regain the top spot although I'm dubious as to whether that's
an accounting error on their part, as second place managed to score 2
points, which is impossible, I think - and should never have beaten me.
The other one I had to work at was harder - Can You Save Me , by
Power I
could not
beat. I managed to add 15,000 or so to my score, but still
couldn't catch up to the other person. I'll have to try again some
other time.
I played Second Love , from Remedy Lane , by
Pain Of Salvation and Beyond The Pale ,
because they're both great, and managed to move to the
top of
the scoreboard with 165,357 which is a pretty decent score,
even for a 10 minute track. And then Falling , from The Perfect Element and The Perfect Element , which are similarly
cool. I do like the group, and particular the guitars on all those
tracks.
Replacing the duvet covers doesn't seem to have helped my sleeping too
much but at least it's more comfortable for me.
I woke up this morning wondering how IRC would be affected by IPv6.
Aside from the fact that you can't do the identd check initially (which
was never part of the protocol, just a common suggestion, and useless
with the many Windows systems that never used it), the core protocol is
unchanged. However, CTCP DCC requests (chats and file transfer) would
need to be aware of the different address format.
I wonder if I might be ill. I don't feel well a lot of the time, and I'm
tired, and I can't face eating much, and I have general difficulty
remembering stuff. I think I'm probably just lazy.
On the other hand, thinking back over some of the things I used to do,
I'm really not as productive as I used to be - things take me so much
longer to do, and I'm not sure I'm doing them as well as I did in the
past.
Of course I could just be being overly critical and paranoid .
Really, really, really tired today. Did not sleep at all well last
night. I'm think it's probably related to the new duvet cover which I'm
not getting on with. It looks so pretty though! I'll give it another
night and see how we get on and if I'm not sleeping I'll just have to
give up on it . I got to work about half an hour late this morning
because I was so sleepy trying to get out of bed. Well, that and I'd
woken through the night with bad dreams - one where Caroline was cooking
tea, and one where I was trying to strangle someone using just the power
of my mind (although I'm not sure who, or why).
Speaking of dreams, I came to the kitchen at work today and someone was
doing the maths for how far away the Sun is from the Earth. My instant
answer of '8 light minutes' was pretty close. My justification may have
sounded a bit odd - I remember it because it was
in a dream
once. Obviously that's not why I believe it to be true, but that's the
reason that I remember it.
On the other hand, my comment that the moon is 3 light seconds away
appears to be wrong. It's 1.28 light seconds away, which might be where
I got the idea that it's 3 light-seconds - that's about the best-case
for getting a response from someone on the moon, because what you say
would take 1.28 seconds to get to the Moon; allow for thinking time, and
to realise the speaker had finished with their 'beep' (which I think
they'd have used?) and then 1.28 seconds for your response to arrive
back on Earth. I don't feel too bad for remembering that.
I'm not sure I could do the maths to work out the time from the Sun to
the Earth though. Well... maybe I could but I don't necessarily know
the conversions - the Sun is 93 million miles away ("Orbitting this at a
distance of roughly 93 million miles is an utterly insignificant little
blue-green planet whose ape-descended lifeforms are so amazingly
primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat
idea"), and the speed of light it 300 million metres per second... and
then I'm stuck 'cos I don't know how many metres are in a mile.
But anyhow... '93E6 * metres in a mile / 300E6 / 60' = distance in light
minutes.
I guess you can cancel some things out there. The millions can go, and
90/6 is 15. And you can multiply together the remaining 10 and 300, so
'15 * metres in a mile / 3000'. Hmm. Which would be 'metres in a mile /
200'.
Ok, I give up, let's look up that value... metres in a mile is 1609.
So... 1600/200 is 8, so 8 minutes-ish. There was a good dose of rounding
there, so that's not too bad.
Wrote 2300 words tonight, which wasn't as much as I'd like, but it was
about just one thing so it's not too bad. There are a few more bits I
need to write on that subject though. I wanted to refer to a page on
drobe, but the picture I wanted was on another site and had been removed
- instead I went to Iconbar and found that their report had a similar
picture... which was broken. I had a quick guess at where I'd find
someone who might be able to fix it on IRC and guessed right - any they
fixed it up there and then, which was pretty nice of them.
More amusing, though, was the IRC client I connected with was actually
IPv6 enabled and so I appeared to have come from an IPv6 host - and the
reverse DNS worked too! I think that's pretty neat really.
More writing today; I've managed about 4500 words, although I'm not
really happy with the way it turned out. I'll have to go back over it
later, I think.
Managed to watch

confronts the head of PhiCorp with a story about kidnapping his
girlfriend. 4 episodes left, so it's going to have to have something
more to it if it's going to feel worthwhile.
After having my new duvet cover on last night, I've also decided to
swap the pillows over. I'd been keeping the new ones for the guest
room, but since there's nobody there and nobody likely to be, I thought
'why bother?', so I've swapped them into my room now. I'm sure that
they'll take a little getting used to, but will be better in the long
run. Wow, it's an exciting life here!

remiss of me, but it's actually not too bad.
According to the ex-picsel guys - and Companies House - Picsel UK Ltd's
status is currently 'Active - Proposal to strike off'. According to the
information on the Companies House website, a company can apply to be
struck off if it's been inactive for 3 months or its only activity has
been to be to take action to be struck off. Or it can be
struck off by the Registrar if the company seems inactive - eg it hasn't
filed documents with Companies House. Apparently there's 3 months to
respond to the letters that they send and to file the documents. Failure
to do so can result in the directors being prosecuted.
Since the company's still active - people are working for it and
(presumably) being paid by it - I don't think they could apply for it
to be struck off. As such I reckon it's the registrar trying to force
them to submit the required documents.
Apparently the accounts were due 17/5/2011. As it's nearly 3 months
later, I assume that they give 3 months grace, then start getting arsey.
I'm sure that old-Picsel Ltd was overdue by more and wasn't propsed for
being struck off. On the other hand, it's possible I guess that
someone's brought it to the attention of companies house - not sure if
creditors can do that. Alledgedly about 8 people were made redundant
recently.
Tired today; not really done much, but I did do some washing, and I've
put my new duvet cover on the bed. It's all purple and pretty!

The 'Omega Girls' is a reference to "The Omega Man (1971)Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller Robert Neville, a doctor, due to an experimental vaccine, is the only survivor of an apocalyptic war waged with biological weapons. I believe - here the protagonist was
the last man alive (and Jo and Zoe were the only ones left in Eureka). I
discovered, though, that The Omega Man is based on a book called "I Am Legend (2007)Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller Robert Neville is a scientist who was unable to stop the spread of the terrible virus that was incurable and man-made. microwave. Went to work, and looked into the problem I'd had last night
being unable to ssh to a machine. My account didn't actually exist.
Looked at the nightly tests and found that every branch had build
failures due to running out of disc space - on a machine that usually
has 45G free.
The day improved, though.
I was just watching a little bit of "Shoot 'Em Up (2007)Action, Comedy, Crime, ThrillerLate at night, in an unnamed U.S. city, a solitary man sits at a bus stop. A pregnant woman runs by, pursued by a man with a gun. With reluctance, the man at the bus stop rescues her and assists with the baby's delivery, while additional pursuers fire at them, including the gang's particularly nasty leader, an intuitive man named Hertz. Our hero, known only as Smith, determines to save the child and find out why Hertz wants the baby dead. At a local bordello, he tries to employ a lactating hooker to watch the child, but things quickly escalate, and this makeshift family is soon on the run. Heavy metal music calms the baby. Why? A laboratory, gun factory, and presidential campaign all figure in Smith's quest for the child's safe deliverance.Shoot 'Em Up"
to
make sure that the subtitles were right and I had to keep watching -
it's an a gunfight around 33 minutes in that just gets sillier and
sillier, culminating in an escape and the bad guy saying "Do we suck or
is this guy really that good?". It was just so ludicrous it made me
laugh out loud a bit.
How odd. The permalink icons don't appear to work for the new-style
diary entry headers. They're visible, but there's no link active.
I wrote about 4500 words yesterday for a later diary entry, and another
3000 or so this evening. The worst thing is that I've skimmed over a lot
of things and I've still managed to stay in one area rather than drift
off into other rambles. I tried making a plan for the other areas I
should cover and it's come to about 60 distinct sections, and still
skipping a whole load of stuff. I think I may have to trim what I want
to say .
Torchwood (2006, Starz!)Action and Adventure/Drama/Science-FictionCaptain Jack Harkness is a man from the 51st century trapped in the past, finding himself drawn into alien conspiracies as he works for Torchwood. Torchwood is a top secret British government agency whose job it is to investigate alien goings on in the world, and to act as mankind's best interest and last hope for defence, if needed.Torchwood today; a very predicable endig with the smoke
filling the skies. It seems to have been very drawn out, with very
little suspense or action. Children Of Earth wasn't as bad, because we
knew it was only going to be 5 days. We're missing a whole lot of
Torchwoodness, I reckon. (possible spoilers follow)
Bizarrely, the first
review I picked from a google search manages to describe the
episode thus: "This week's entry in the Torchwood saga is a brilliant
episode, full of emotion and scathing looks at the current state of
affairs in the world." Maybe I'm sufficiently jaded that I don't really
see it as a brilliant episode - it's a quite lame sci-fi theme to draw
on a direct historical parallel, and the concentration camps parallel
was telegraphed last week.
New cartoon series of
ThunderCats (2011, Cartoon Network)Action and Adventure/Animation/Children/Science-Fiction/FantasyAfter Thundera is attacked by the lizard people, Lion-O leads the ThunderCats on a quest for the Book of Omens, the one artifact that could guide them to victory. But he'll have to face villains like the ancient evil sorceror Mumm-Ra and the dangerous lizard general Slithe. Luckily, he has the Sword of Omens and its amazing powers at his disposal.ThunderCats has started recently.
I've seen a little of it - I never really liked the original that much
anyhow - and it's not all that much to rave about. I'm also not a target
audience though .
No telly today - I've still got some things to catch up on, but I was
playing a 'new' (to me) game. 'Limbo' is a cute game, entirely in
greyscale, with a very filmy look. It's rather neat - a bit like
'And Yet It Moves', and with a little of the quirky feel of 'Blueberry
Garden'. And very dark. There's many ways to die - and you do die... a
lot. After playing it for a little bit on the desktop, I decided that it
would be fun downstairs. On the 40" telly it's very cute .
